Low resident to staff ratio in a small facility
Marian Place is unique because it feels like a personal home, not an institution.
Personal resident preferences are respected. These include: sleeping patterns, special food accommodations, religious beliefs or enjoying outdoor walks.
Marian Place offers private and semi-private rooms. Roommate preferences are always met. Families typically prefer their loved ones to have a private room, however like with college dorm rooms semi-private rooms provide companionship. The buddy system is a good for positive reinforcement and friendship.
We encourage family participation in your loved ones life, as well as the other seniors in the home. Family is always welcome to bring church friends of girl/boy scout group in for a visit. The residents always enjoy a visit from a group or a visit from pet therapy dogs.
Advantages
Our home has fewer residents, resulting in a more tranquil setting. Fewer residents means more consistent staff. In a small environment, the residents get to know each other and the people who are taking care of them. This is critical in the more advanced stages of Alzheimer’s.
A personalized touch is vital for someone who can no longer provide the simple daily activities of living. These include bathing/hygiene, cooking, cleaning, dressing. We encourage our residents to help with some of the daily activities, to allow them to build strength and confidence. In a larger facility this type of activity is usually not an option.
People with Alzheimer’s / Dementia typically behave and stay healthier in a smaller environment. They have fewer unknown people and the staff have the ability to get to know the individuals personal needs.
Disadvantages
Residential Care Homes typically do not staff full time RN’s. The homes will contract with, or in some cases, have an RN on staff over several facilities. This may become a disadvantage when the resident needs full time RN care for what could be a number of needs. An example of some of these needs would be: resident requires IV’s, trach-care or serious wounds.
However, the Residential Care Home does have the ability to utilize a Home Health or Hospice companies as a resource for daily / part time RN service needs. Marian Place is able to provide care for many high need residents. Please inquire about needs and levels of care.
